In Japan the New Year is a time for great deals. Stores put leftover merchandise from last year into fukubukuro or lucky bags and sell them for cheap. You can't see what's inside, but the contents are always worth waaaay more than what you pay for them. Last year my wife bought two bags for 10,000 yen each (about $100 each) and got 80,000 yen (about $800) worth of clothes. Crazy deals!
