Four little girls are dead, murdered by their mother who claimed they were "possessed by demons". Despite contact with five separate government agencies, none of which investigated the numerous reports alluding to Banita Jacks' mental illness, the media is now blaming this tragedy on the lack of supervision of homeschooling families.

There is no evidence suggesting that Banita Jacks actually homeschooled her girls. There is plenty of evidence suggesting that social workers let this family fall through the cracks. Repeatedly.

This case should not serve as grounds for increased supervision or scrutiny of homeschooling families. It should be, instead, a rallying cry for improved assistance for those with severe mental illness.
