Banning students from using the web

If anyone has been a student during the digital age, he/she will know, that using wikipedia as an essay source is a tabu in the academical circles. But the decision of a lecturer to ban her students from using online services, has raised some interesting issues: Should students be allowed to use wikipedia and google in their university essays? An invitation for discussion on the subject.
