Are Election Polls Worthless?

How often are our election outcomes actually decided by the news coverage of election polls? Are they really adding any value or do they just impact voter turnout. I personally think we would be better off if polls didn't receive so much focus during election times. I know they have a value for the candidates so they can guage their performance but does the average voter really need bombarded with the latest poll updates every half hour?
