When I started writing this poem, I set out with a goal to create something which measured up against Allen Ginsberg's Howl. If you have never heard of it, it's a massively-long epic poem from the Beat Generation. Written in the midst of the Vietnam War, it describes the turmoil and loss of the time.

I told myself that I was tired of writing inane, pointless poems about myself. I was tired of self-absorbed lamentations and other bullshit. I wanted to write something which really mattered. So here it is.

I do not know if I could ever measure up to the incredible ability of the masters of previous generations, but I hope that this poem leaves a mark somewhere, anywhere.
