No Avatar, No Visitors?

We all know images can work wonders, but have you ever noticed that you visit sites/profiles less when there's no avatar? How important is that small image when it comes to getting traffic or being recognized throughout the internet?

I mean, an avatar can make you recognized without a name involved. But instance, I see many people using the same avatar image and I recognize them immediately on other social networks.
